MINDSET
There’s a lot of talk in the online space around how to cultivate a MIND-SET of abundance, gratitude, expansion, holding, success, etc., the truth? They all work.
An Astrology practitioner will tell you one thing, a Human Design expert will say another, a Business Coach will say something else, & a Pleasure Coach will say another thing.
Again, they all work, so my intention here isn’t to try to convince you that one is better than the other.
What I’ll demonstrate here is a larger overarching picture of the importance of doing the mindset work, regardless of how you decide to carry it out.
The lessons I learned as it relates to business around MINDSET are these:
Lesson 1: It’s not my responsibility to try to fit my beliefs around what someone else is saying.
It’s my responsibility to utilize my discernment to determine whether or not what they’re saying is aligned with what I ALREADY BELIEVE TO BE TRUE.
Now, that certainly doesn’t mean my beliefs are set in stone (although a lot of them are), but it does mean they can’t be easily swayed. It’s so important to utilize discernment when consuming ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET. Everyone says THEIR way is the best, and I don’t doubt that, but if it’s not what I believe to be true, then I won’t be borrowing their belief for size.
Lesson 2: You need to be extremely discerning on whether or not it’s a mindset thing or a mental health thing.
Now, this one is something I thought over and over again about including in this message. But I’m not one from shying away from saying stuff that ruffles feathers, and I’m not going to start now, so let’s address this.
There are tooooooo many instances I’ve encountered where entrepreneurs will convince themselves that their thoughts are a result of a “scarcity mindset.” And it breaks my heart because the root of a lot of these occurrences is coaches who PUSH on clients to perform when they need to take personal inventory and seek support outside of the coaches’ responsibility.
If a client is coming to you time and time again with a “mindset” issue and you PUSH on them to “fix it” or say, “it’s your scarcity mindset” or even say, “I don’t want to talk about this again” then please do better. Clients are human and as a Coach, you need to be discerning on whether or not it’s a MINDSET-related aspect or a MENTAL HEALTH-related aspect.
I understand the lines of Coaching and Therapy can be a bit blurred but please, rest assured they are inherently different at their core.
It’s my number one responsibility to ensure the safety of my clients and I’ll never hesitate to recommend when and if counsel outside of the scope of my work is something to consider. I’ve done it before and I’ll happily do it again.
Lesson 3: Your mindset practice is more important when things are going well than when things aren’t.
Let me break this down because I can see how this will cause some of you to turn your heads to the left in confusion.
Riddle me this, isn’t it easier to celebrate yourself when things are going well? Inbound inquiries, cash flow coming in, team members performing exquisitely well and you feel on TOP of the world? What about when you hit a rough patch and cash flow slows down, or you’re searching for clients in the daytime with a flashlight, and nothing seems to be working?
This is where the mindset work you’ve been putting in will show up.
Because seasons of highs and lows are normal. Seasons of expansion and contraction are the name of the game.
When you can master your mindset practices while you’re in a season of expansion, those seasons of contraction won’t FEEL as inflated, or deregulating, and make you think your business is doomed.
I practice mindset daily, regardless of what’s going on and especially when I’m riding on a high and not because I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop but because when I’m ready to lean into something MORE expansive, I KNOW my mindset will already be there.
Lesson 4: The 21 days to form a habit perspective, is shit.
What do they say? It takes 21 days to form a habit? I say it takes as quickly or as long as you allow it to.
Habits carried out consistently and innately without a second thought are done so because they become a part of your inherent identity.
Stick with me here, if you thought you were someone who consistently executed content, and you backed up that belief with executing content every day, wouldn’t you agree that it inherently becomes a habit, thus demonstrating you as someone who is “consistent”?
So then the identity work you probably did was reiterate – I’m CONSISTENT.
When you stop trying to focus on executing the tactic and cultivate on shifting your identity that’s when it forms. Not because you did it for 21 days unmindfully.
Again, these are MY LESSONS around mindset work, use your discernment. You’re welcome to disagree with me of course.
Lesson 5: Setting your mind on what you want to be true, rather than what your circumstance is presenting, is a practice.
Just like you can’t expect to do one downward dog and be a flexible yogi, you can’t expect to do one fear inventory around making more money and expect to be an overnight millionaire (although the online space will make you believe you can). You must PRACTICE your mindset work consistently to see results.
The PRACTICE of cultivating a MIND SET on what you want IS the name of the game. Do it enough and you’ll convince your brain (and body if you really do the work) that you’re damn near in the experience you’re desiring. Thus drawing the desired experience more to you. That does NOT mean affirmation yourself to death in front of your mirror and then going sit on the sofa all day … be real. Do your mindset work, take action, stop stressing over the shit you can’t control, and focus on what you can.
Lesson 6: Bonus – Just because you have a mindset setback doesn’t mean you still won’t get the result.
There’s a running joke most of us entrepreneurs make that goes a little something like this, “once you’ve passed the 6-figure mark everything becomes about mindset.” And while we’ll all keep laughing and saying that line with a sarcastic emphasis on it, it’s honestly the truth. At a certain point in your entrepreneurial journey, you’ll likely have your most important processes mastered, such as your content, sales, marketing, onboarding, offboarding, email, etc., therefore, the only thing really in the way of you seeing bigger results is likely … you guessed it … your mindset.
Now, because we’re humans and we have this lovely protective mechanism known as our brain, what happens when we start to embark on our journey to see bigger results than we ever have before OR maybe it’s not a bigger result and it’s pivoting the way you’re doing anything in business, that protective mechanism kicks into gear.
That protective mechanism starts to do its JOB and reminds you of all the reasons taking this next step, i.e. going for bigger results or pivoting into something new and/or different, isn’t safe.
Your brain is literally doing its JOB… but here’s the truth, that doesn’t mean we HAVE to listen to it. Especially if we’re not in any inherent danger. I mean we’re just talking about raising your rates here… not fighting a mountain lion, like come on.
But that doesn’t mean you have to listen to it.
Just because you have a day where your mind wants to tell you, “You’re not good enough”, “no one is going to buy”, “you should be doing more”, “how dare you take a nap when you haven’t signed a client in a month”, doesn’t mean that we still won’t get the result.
So, here’s the tip:
Work on your mindset practice literally every day. When things are going well, when you’ve hit a rough patch, when you don’t want to when you’d rather do ANYTHING else… do your damn mindset work.
Find a practice you enjoy, create a ritual of it, or develop a routine or hell list of 10 things you COULD do every day and do at least ONE of them.
